PURPOSE

Deaf Expo committee are aware and understand from our own experience, there currently appears to be little or no representation of Deaf or disabled people with cancer in New Zealand. It is possible that Deaf and hearing impaired people may be under-represented as a minority group. The NZ Cancer Society (Auckland branch) has confirmed that few Deaf people have accessed their services in recent years.

As we are all aware with the NZ Disability Strategy 2001 and NZ Sign Language (NZSL) Act 2006 form current key government policy or legislation for Deaf and hearing impaired people. This is to ensure that Deaf and hearing impaired people have good access to information and community support services that are readily available in the hearing community.

It is proposed that a number of Deaf and hearing impaired women and Men with any forms of cancers are identified as a primary target group and we are seeking donation to support the NZ Breast Cancer and NZ Cancer Society to develop resources that are essential and vital for the Deaf community.

Benefits for NZ Breast Cancer/Cancer Society:

• To exchange network/educate the Deaf Community throughout NZ.
• Establish a Deaf Trustees to support on-going with Cancers organization by developing resources etc and for the future events.
• Develop a DVD with subtitles
• Pamphlet in NZ Sign Language
• Set up website with a NZSL Signer
• Interpreter/Deaf Awareness workshop

Benefits for the Deaf/Hearing Impaired Communities:

• Deaf people will receive a Cancer NZ Sign Language DVD so they become more aware and educated about Deaf people with cancer eg: where to get advice and support from GPs, nurses and Cancer Society.
• Have an on-going support group, training out the Deaf/Hearing community throughout NZ with a NZ Sign Language interpreter.
• On-going update information from NZ Breast Foundation and NZ Cancer Society by website and newsletter.
• Organise a weekend of pampering and inspirational speakers from Deaf/Hearing Impaired Women/Men who has survivor through Cancer.
